The Grayling Fish Hatchery is located in historic Grayling, Michigan.
The hatchery is operated by Harrietta Hills Trout Farm in cooperation with Crawford County.
About the Grayling Fish Hatchery
The Grayling Fish Hatchery was founded in 1914 by Rasmus Hanson, who obtained the original property through timber rights in Crawford County. In 1916 he formed the Grayling Fish Hatchery Club to enhance natural trout reproduction in our streams and rivers.
Part of the original purpose was to save the nearly extinct Michigan Grayling, once the dominant fish in the AuSable River. This initiative eventually failed but they were successful in planting Brook and Brown Trout in the river system.
The Grayling Fish Hatchery was sold to the State of Michigan in 1926 for $10,000 and run by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources until the late 1960's when it was closed.
The facility was dormant until 1983 when the property was transferred to Crawford County. From 1983 to 1993 it was operated as a summer attraction by the Grayling Fish Hatchery Committee, attracting thousands of visitors each summer. From 1994 to 2011 the facility was operated by the Grayling Recreation Authority.
In 2012 Crawford County recognized a need for a new long-term strategy for the preservation of the facility and entered into a unique public / private partnership agreement with Harrietta Hills Trout Farm, LLC to operate the facility. Harrietta Hills will continue to maintain the open visitation programs and summer recreation aspects of the Grayling Fish Hatchery, but will also use the facility for commercial trout production to create a revenue stream that will support the facility into the future.
